Preventing Problems Before They Start
The health of your teeth and mouth is very important to the well-being of your entire body, and while routine brushing and flossing at home is necessary to keep your smile looking its best, visiting your dentist for a comprehensive exam and cleaning is essential.
The American Dental Association recommends that you visit your dentist every six months to ensure your teeth stay healthy and your smile stays beautiful.
By routinely seeing your dentist for exams and cleanings, you can:
- Prevent tooth decay, gum disease, and bad breath
- Save money by avoiding costly and extensive dental procedures
- Keep your teeth white by reducing staining from food and drinks
- Shorten the time spent in your dentist’s office
- Have a smile that will last a lifetime
The Exam
During your exam, your dentist will thoroughly examine your teeth and gums for signs of tooth decay, gum disease, and other health problems.
Your dentist may also want to take X-rays to see what is happening beneath the surface of your teeth and gums.
Whether these X-rays are traditional or digital, the images provided will help your dentist discover dental issues not visible to the naked eye.
Professional Cleanings
Your dental hygienist will begin your cleaning by exploring the surface of your teeth to determine if you have any cavities and to examine the quality of existing fillings.
The dental hygienist will then perform a periodontal exam to make sure your gums adhere tightly to your teeth, and no periodontal disease or bone loss may be occurring.
Next, your hygienist will carefully clean your teeth with a variety of tools to remove any hard mineral buildup (tartar) from your teeth.
Then your hygienist will floss your teeth, use a polishing compound, and apply fluoride.
Cleanings usually aren’t painful, but if you have any anxiety about your dental exam, be sure to let your hygienist know.
They may offer several sedation options to ensure your comfort.
If your dentist or hygienist finds tooth decay or gum disease, they will talk to you about changing your brushing or flossing habits.
In severe cases, they may recommend antibiotics or other dental treatments.
If your teeth and gums appear to be healthy, your dentist will probably recommend that you continue your brushing and flossing routine as usual.

I have always had a fear of the dentist until now. The entire staff at Strupp & Brumm are very caring, friendly and professional. I am so glad that I found this office and finally found a great Dentist. I highly recommend! - 8/11/2020read moreread lessAmanda M.
I was in bad shape when I visited Dr Strupp and Dr Brumm. I’d experienced dental malpractice from my last dentist. Dr Strupp and Dr Brumm helped me coordinate with an endosontist and periodontist. They put together an affordable program to fix me up. They were caring and so nice. They got my teeth back to a healthy state and I’m now doing regular cleaning and care with absolutely no problems. I would recommend them both to anyone! - 1/11/2019read moreread lessChris Z.

I started going to Strupp 5 years ago. When i look at the before pictures, I cant believe i waited so long. He builds beautiful teeth and now i smile a lot more. Bill has done alot of work for the NY Yankees and its not uncommon to see Steinbrenners family in the office. Everyone is nice and friendly. The only negative is that they bill you up front and submit the paper work to your insurance to get reimbursed but i think thats normal these days. - 1/24/2013

They do a wonderful job, very friendly staff and always make us feel relaxed and comfortable. I have been taking my daughter here since she was 2 and she is excited to go every time. They are gentle with her and allow me in the room during her cleanings. They are the best I have ever used and they set the bar high for all dental practices. - 9/18/2019

I have been a patient for many years. Both Dr. Strupp & Dr. Brumm have treated me & Penny is my hygienist. I have always received excellent care, the dentists and staff are the most knowledgeable team of practitioners I have ever come across. Bottom line, EXCELLENCE in dentistry, customer service, pain free & comfort. Polly came in on a Saturday for an emergency visit. Every time I have my teeth cleaned I always receive an update on my dental health. Very sterile environment with top of the line Porcelain crowns. - 6/19/2012
